You are invited to celebrate the opening of Sansei Granddaughters' Journey: From Remembrance to Resistance. The Sansei Granddaughters are honored to be invited by the AZ Gallery to mount this group exhibition. It is the most extensive showing of their artwork together in one space to date and they are thrilled to have the opportunity to share it with you. Please invite your friends, colleagues and family. 

The reception will be introduced by a musical taiko performance by Naoko Amemiya and Lori Honjiyo.

​Shining a Light on Remembrance Lantern Making Workshop

Facilitated by Na Omi Judy Shintani, MA. Shintani uses art as a process and meditation. Her family’s incarceration story was the catalyst to offer this workshop focused on celebration and remembrance of loved ones. Participants can honor ancestors, friends, special events in their lives, those who inspire them, or even pets. Participants will bring photos of loved ones. All other materials supplied.

Limited to 12 attendees. Registration required. No art experience necessary. For adults and children over 10 years accompanied by adult.

Topaz Stories: Preserving stories of the Japanese American Incarceration

Presenter Ruth Sasaki, editor of the Topaz Stories Project, Authors: Ann Tamaki Dion, Jonathan Hirabayashi, Cynthia Kami, Joseph Nishimura, Ruth Sasaki. Sasaki will discuss the Topaz Stories project, how the stories were collected, and what she looks for in a story. Local authors will share writings about their families’ forced removal and experiences, mainly in Tanforan, followed by questions from participants in a panel discussion format. This is a project of the Friends of Topaz. www.topazstories.com has over 70 stories.

​Sansei Granddaughters’ Journey Film Screening and Artist Conversation

The Sansei Granddaughters will screen “Sansei Granddaughters’ Journey”, that documents their experiences on an annual pilgrimage to the WWII Manzanar camp in 2018 and their art. The film has been featured in film festivals, including Films of Remembrance 2022, DisOrient Film Festival in Eugene, Oregon, and the Silicon Valley Asian Pacific FilmFest in San Jose. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the artists, encouraging questions and engagement with the audience.

Intro: Musical taiko performance by Naoko Amemiya and Lori Honjiyo.

Nancy Ukai, Project Director of 50 Objects/Stories  will display selected Tanforan artifacts and talk about objects related to people who were incarcerated at Tanforan. Examples: Kay Sekimachi's paper dolls, a Cal diploma mailed to a horse stall, a secretly packed box from Berkeley, Ibuki’s doll, Shizuko Ina's Quaker quilt and James Wakasa's claim for unemployment.

Flowering Cherry Blossom Workshop

Facilitator Kathy Fujii-Oka. Sansei granddaughter, Kathy Fujii-Oka will present her Cherry Blossom Installation (in the exhibition) and how it relates to her family, their nursery, and the incarceration. She will facilitate creating a 3-dimensional cherry blossom textile flower. Using decorative fabrics and trims, with personal photos, students will learn how to make their own flower for a loved one who has died or someone they dearly love.

Limited to 12 attendees. Sewing experience helpful. For adults and children over 10 years accompanied by adult.

Tsuru For Solidarity, Art and Social Justice Talk, Film, Tsuru Origami Making Activity

Tsuru for Solidarity is a non-violent, direct-action project of Japanese American social justice advocates and allies working to end detention sites and support directly impacted immigrants and refugee communities. Origami tsuru, folded crane, is a symbol of peace and serves as an iconic symbol to bring people together to work side by side, build allies, create change, and begin the healing process. Members will share their tsuru stories and show their unique tsuru creations with messages of hope and support, and giant flying tsuru. Screenings of two films, Flying Cranes (2:09 min) and Tsuru History (15:31 min), will be introduced by award-winning Producer/Director Emiko Omori. Please join in a tsuru origami making activity.
